Essay 112: 43 ways I have improved my life

In honor of my 43rd birthday coming up at the end of the month, here is a list of 43 things that I’ve done, learned, bought or changed to make my life better. (In no particular order)

I quit eating meat. (21 years ago).

I quit smoking. I come from a country where smoking is still to this day extremely widespread. When I was a teenager, it was simply the thing to do. I also stopped smoking 21 years ago, a logical consequence of being married to an athlete. It was hard (I remember crying a lot whenever I craved a cigarette) but so worth it.

I started using an electric toothbrush.

I started dressing up for no particular occasion.

I studied photography. (I’m a published photographer: I took all of the photo sequences for my husband’s third book ‘Choke Em Out”.)

 I learned how to type.

I practiced martial arts and became a jiu jitsu black belt (in addition to my other instructor credentials)

I said yes to a layered haircut.

I studied Microsoft Word, Photoshop and a variety of other softwares.

I learned how to build a website.

I learned how to cook a quiche.

I started using natural skin care products.

 I practice yoga 1/week.

I get massages every 3 weeks.

 I became a better listener.

 I became a calmer mom.

 I learned Italian.

 I’m learning Japanese.

I’ve learned to be a better wife.

I’ve learned to be a better mom.

I’ve learned to be a better friend.

 I’ve learned to like myself.

I cultivated a taste for Japanese cuisine (it took me a while).

 I’ve read many enlightening books.

 I chose homeschooling.

I moved to Los Angeles to get married.

 I moved to Hawaii.

I bought a house in Kailua.
